§ 9. Vice-mayor; acting mayor.

  • The council shall biennially, following the regular municipal election, choose one of its members as vice-mayor. The vice-mayor shall perform the duties of the mayor during his absence or disability. In the event of the death, removal or resignation of the mayor the council shall choose one of the councilmen or some other qualified voter of the City of Manassas who shall serve as mayor until the next succeeding municipal election, at which time a successor shall be elected by the qualified voters of the City of Manassas to fill the office of mayor for the remainder of the unexpired term.

    Should a member of the council be chosen to serve as mayor until the next municipal election such councilman shall be deemed to have surrendered his office as councilman forthwith upon his qualification as mayor and his office of councilman shall thereupon be vacant. The vacancy thereby created in the council shall be filled by the council as provided in section 6 hereof.

    The member of the council who shall be chosen as vice-mayor shall continue to have all rights, privileges, powers, duties and obligations of councilman while performing the duties of mayor during the absence or disability of the mayor of the city.
